A Boogie wit da Hoodie (or simply A Boogie) whose real name is Artist, is an American recording artist from Bronx, New York City. In 2016, he released his debut mixtape, Artist and found his independent record label, HighBridge with fellow Bronx rapper Don Q. His popular songs, "My Shit" and "Bando" have been played on Hot 97 radio by Funkmaster Flex.

Early life[]

A Boogie was born on December 3, 1995 in Highbridge, a neighborhood in the Bronx. At the age of 12, he began writing raps. However, he wasn't confident about delivering them, so he kept them to himself. He started rapping when he attended DeWitt Clinton High School. In 2013, he moved to Florida. In June 2016, he moved back to the Bronx with his brother.[1]

Career[]

2016–present: Career beginnings[]

In January 2016, A Boogie started taking music seriously and started releasing his own material on SoundCloud.[1] A Boogie released his debut mixtape, Artist on March 8, 2016 on his independent record label, Highbridge. The mixtape has over 26,000 downloads and 400,000 listens on the website DatPiff alone. In April, he released the single, "Bag on Me" with fellow Bronx rapper, Don Q. In a little over a month, the song has tallied for more than 1.2 million listens between SoundCloud and YouTube.[2] In May, A Boogie headlined and sold out on his show at B.B. Kings in New York City. After that, Meek Mill quoted A Boogie on some of his pictures on Instagram, Juelz Santana saluted him, and DJ Khaled showed him out on Snapchat.[3] On May 18, 2016, A Boogie and Don Q released a collaboration mixtape titled, Highbridge the Label: The Takeover Vol. 1 to promote the Highbridge label.[4] The single, "Bag on Me" was included in the tracklist. DJ Spinking arranged a remix of the song featuring Jadakiss. Fabolous and Remy Ma would also remix A Boogie's hit "My Shit".

Influences[]

A Boogie's style is heavily based off melody and catchy hooks as he mixes hip hop and R&B. Due to his vocals he has been labeled a male version of Dej Loaf, he has also been compared to Akon. A Boogie's subject matter entails stories of relationships, heartbreaks, rags to riches stories, and street tales from his upbringing. A Boogie has listed Nas, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Kanye West, and Drake as some of his favorite rappers and main influences.[5] A Boogie's name is derived from the film Paid In Full whose main character goes by Ace Boogie. His name is also in tribute to the Bronx as the borough is nicknamed the Boogie Down.[6]
